Lieyu

Lieyu, also known as Lieyu Township or Liehyu, is a rural township in Kinmen County, Taiwan. It is located on the Lieyu Island, a smaller island to the west of the main Kinmen Island, and is part of the Kinmen archipelago. The township is characterized by its agricultural landscapes, coastal scenery, and a history deeply intertwined with the military presence on Kinmen.

Geographically, Lieyu Island is relatively flat with some low-lying hills. Its proximity to mainland China, particularly Xiamen, has made it a strategically important location throughout history. This strategic importance led to a significant military presence, with many fortifications and bunkers still visible today. These remnants of past conflicts are now a notable feature of the island's landscape and a draw for visitors interested in military history.

Economically, Lieyu has traditionally relied on agriculture and fishing. However, in recent decades, tourism has emerged as an increasingly important sector. Visitors are drawn to the island's unique history, its natural beauty, and its peaceful, rural atmosphere. Attractions include the National Penghu Ocean National Park, which encompasses the waters around Lieyu, and various historical sites. The township maintains a quiet, traditional way of life, offering a contrast to the more developed areas of Taiwan. Lieyu is accessible by ferry from the main Kinmen Island.
