Licenseduse refers to the lawful use of materials protected by copyright, patents, or trademarks under a license granted by the rights holder. It distinguishes permissible use from unlicensed use and from defenses such as fair use. A license is a contract that grants permission to use the work under defined terms, including what may be done with the work (reproduction, distribution, display, modification, or commercialization), the scope (geographic and temporal), any fees or royalties, attribution requirements, and whether sublicensing or transfer is allowed. Licenses may be exclusive or non-exclusive and can be granted for a limited period or for the duration of the work’s protection.

License models vary, including commercial licenses, non-commercial licenses, and open or permissive licenses such as Creative Commons, which provide standardized terms to facilitate reuse. Compliance is a mutual obligation: users must adhere to the license terms, and rights holders may enforce terms through remedies if breached, including termination of the license. License terms can differ by jurisdiction and asset type, so careful review of the contract or license document is advisable, sometimes with legal counsel for complex or large-scale uses.

Licenseduse is distinct from fair use, a legal defense in some jurisdictions that permits limited unlicensed use under specific conditions. However, licensing provides clear, predictable rights and obligations, reducing uncertainty in content and technology reuse.
