The fundamental principle involved converting text into electrical pulses that could travel through wires.

The earliest practical telegraph system was developed by Samuel Morse in the 1830s and 1840s. This system utilized Morse code, a series of dots and dashes representing letters and numbers. A telegraph operator would send messages by tapping out the code on a device called a telegraph key, which would then transmit the electrical signals to a receiver at the other end. The receiver would either produce a paper tape with dots and dashes or an audible clicking sound that the receiving operator would translate back into text.

Systems became faster and more efficient, with advancements like automatic telegraphs and multiplexing, which allowed multiple messages to be sent over the same line simultaneously.
