Lenkung

Lenkung refers to the German term for "steering," which in automotive engineering describes the system responsible for directing a vehicle’s wheels to control its movement along a desired path. The primary function of a steering system is to allow the driver to navigate turns, maintain alignment, and correct the vehicle’s direction through feedback and control mechanisms.

Modern steering systems typically include components such as the steering wheel, steering column, rack and pinion mechanism, tie rods, and sometimes a power-assisted unit, such as a hydraulic or electric power steering (EPS) system. The rack and pinion system, widely used in contemporary vehicles, converts rotational motion from the steering wheel into linear motion, turning the wheels via the tie rods. This design is efficient and compact compared to older recirculating ball systems.

Steering precision and responsiveness are critical for safety, particularly at higher speeds or in emergency maneuvers. Power steering enhances maneuverability by reducing the physical effort required from the driver, especially useful in large or heavy vehicles. Some advanced systems incorporate electronic stability control (ESC) or adaptive steering to adjust handling based on road conditions or vehicle dynamics.

In addition to automotive applications, "Lenkung" can also refer to the steering mechanisms in other vehicles, such as motorcycles, bicycles, or even industrial machinery. Proper maintenance of steering components, including regular inspections for wear or fluid leaks, is essential to ensure reliable operation and prevent accidents. Innovations in steering technology continue to improve driver assistance features, such as lane-keeping assist or automated steering aids, further enhancing vehicle safety and convenience.
