Legitimiteet refers to the quality or state of being legitimate. In a political or social context, it signifies that a government, institution, or authority is considered rightful and justifiable in the eyes of its subjects or the public. Legitimacy is not the same as legality; a law may be legal but not legitimate, and vice versa. It is often based on the consent of the governed, democratic processes, tradition, charisma of leaders, or adherence to established legal and constitutional frameworks.
