Legacynetwork is a distributed, peer-to-peer network designed to preserve digital artifacts and ensure long-term accessibility across changing technologies. The project emphasizes compatibility with legacy file formats and hardware while enabling ongoing decentralization and resilience.

The network operates through a sparse set of storage nodes that hold redundant copies of content. Data are stored with content-addressable addressing and erasure coding to withstand node churn. A metadata layer records provenance, format, and retention policies, and cryptographic hashes verify integrity. Optional encryption and access controls balance openness with privacy.

Governance is typically community-driven, following open-source principles. In some variants, token-weighted influence or rotating councils guide protocol updates and policy decisions, with decisions made through public discussion and consensus among major stakeholders.

Legacynetwork aims to support long-term preservation by aligning with archival metadata standards such as PREMIS and Dublin Core, and by providing adapters for legacy formats and interoperability with library and archive systems via APIs and connectors.
