Alexandre Yersin and Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran were two French scientists who both made significant medical discoveries. Laveran was a military surgeon who made major findings on malaria, work for which he was awarded a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1907. He is particularly known for his discovery of the parasite that causes the disease, the plasmodium, which led to a better understanding of the disease.

A town on Reunion Island in the French overseas department of the same name is also named after the scientist, Laverun or Laveran.
