Laufradantrieb

Laufradantrieb, also known as wheel hub drive or in-wheel motor, refers to an electric drive system where the electric motor is directly integrated into the wheel hub. This eliminates the need for traditional drivetrain components such as a transmission, driveshaft, and differential, leading to a more compact and simplified vehicle architecture.

In a typical Laufradantrieb system, a brushless DC electric motor is housed within the wheel. Power is supplied directly to the motor from the vehicle's battery or power source. Each wheel can be driven independently, allowing for precise torque vectoring and advanced traction control capabilities. This independent control also enables features like regenerative braking on each wheel, recapturing energy during deceleration.

The advantages of Laufradantrieb include increased interior space due to the absence of a central drivetrain, improved energy efficiency through direct power delivery, and enhanced driving dynamics and maneuverability. However, challenges exist, such as managing heat dissipation within the confined space of the wheel, protecting the motor from road debris and water, and the increased unsprung weight which can affect ride comfort and suspension performance. Despite these challenges, Laufradantrieb technology is being explored and implemented in various electric vehicles, from concept cars to production models, particularly in niche applications like specialized electric buses, industrial vehicles, and some performance electric cars.
