Latvansiirtelyä

Latvansiirtelyä is a Finnish term that translates to "stem cell transplantation" or "bone marrow transplantation." It refers to a medical procedure where damaged or diseased bone marrow is replaced with healthy stem cells. These healthy stem cells can come from the patient themselves (autologous transplant) or from a donor (allogeneic transplant).

The primary purpose of latvansiirtelyä is to treat certain types of cancer, such as leukemia and lymphoma, as well as other blood disorders like aplastic anemia and thalassemia. It is also used to restore the function of bone marrow that has been damaged by high-dose chemotherapy or radiation therapy, often in the context of cancer treatment.

The procedure involves several stages. First, the patient receives conditioning treatment, which typically includes chemotherapy and/or radiation, to eliminate the diseased cells and prepare the body to receive the new stem cells. Next, the healthy stem cells are infused into the patient's bloodstream, much like a blood transfusion.
