Latticeenergyä refers to the energy changes associated with the formation or disruption of an ionic crystal lattice. In standard terminology, lattice energy is defined as the energy required to completely separate one mole of a solid ionic compound into gaseous ions. Equivalently, it is the energy released when gaseous ions come together to form the solid. Lattice energy is a measure of the strength of the ionic bond within the crystal and is typically expressed in kilojoules per mole, with larger values indicating stronger lattices.

Several factors govern the magnitude of lattice energy. The charges of the ions have a primary influence: higher charges lead to stronger electrostatic attraction and larger lattice energies. Ionic radii also matter: smaller ions allow closer approach and stronger attraction, increasing the lattice energy. The arrangement of ions in the lattice, encapsulated by the Madelung constant, and the overall lattice geometry further affect the energy. As a general trend, salts composed of highly charged, small ions exhibit large lattice energies.

Methods to estimate lattice energy include theoretical models such as the Born–Haber cycle and the Born–Lande equation, which relate lattice energy to charges, interionic distances and lattice geometry. The Kapustinskii equation provides a simpler approximation suitable for quick estimates. Experimental determination is typically indirect and involves thermochemical cycles, combining measured formation, sublimation, ionization, and hydration enthalpies to deduce the lattice energy.

Lattice energy has practical implications for solubility, melting points and the stability of ionic crystals. It informs predictions about salt dissolution, precipitation and the relative strengths of ionic interactions in solids versus in solution, contributing to broader understanding in solid-state chemistry and materials science.
