Latgale

Latgale is one of Latvia's four historical and cultural regions, located in the eastern part of the country. It is bordered by Vidzeme to the north and by the international borders with Belarus and Lithuania to the east and southeast, with Zemgale to the west. The region has a distinct cultural identity associated with the Latgalian people and the Latgalian language.

Geography and environment: Latgale is known for a landscape of flat to gently rolling terrain, numerous lakes and wetland areas. It is often referred to as the land of lakes. The Daugava River and its tributaries flow through the region, and Lubāns Lake is among its notable natural features.

Language and culture: Latgalian language, a variety associated with Latvians in the region, is widely connected to Latgale and is used in education and local media in parts of the area. The region also has a strong Catholic tradition, with the Basilica of the Assumption in Aglona serving as a major pilgrimage site and cultural landmark.

History: The Latgale lands have been shaped by various states and empires. In the early modern period they were part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, later under the Russian Empire, and then incorporated into the independent Republic of Latvia after 1918. The region has a diverse population, including Latgalian Latvians and Russian-speaking communities.

Economy and towns: Latgale has an economy based on agriculture, forestry, and light industry, with tourism driven by its natural scenery and religious sites. Principal towns include Daugavpils, the largest city and cultural center, along with Rezekne, Ludza, and Krāslava.
