Latexproteine

Latexproteine refers to the protein components found in natural rubber latex, produced by the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis. These proteins are present in aqueous latex and contribute to the physical properties of latex products as well as to biological interactions within the plant. The protein composition varies with tree clone, tapping method, and processing, and includes a range of soluble and insoluble proteins.

In consumer and medical products, such as gloves, balloons, and various rubber items, residual latex proteins can remain after manufacturing. Some of these proteins are potent allergens, which means they can trigger immune reactions in susceptible individuals. Not all people exposed to latex will become sensitized, but latex allergy is a recognized condition that can manifest as irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, or a systemic IgE-mediated reaction, including anaphylaxis in severe cases.

Cross-reactivity is a feature of latex proteins for some individuals. Certain latex allergens resemble proteins found in fruits and other plants, a phenomenon known as latex-fruit syndrome. Common associated foods include banana, avocado, chestnut, and kiwi, among others. Diagnosis typically involves patient history, skin prick testing, and/or specific IgE blood tests; component-resolved diagnostics may help identify sensitization to particular latex proteins.

Management centers on avoidance of latex-containing products and the use of alternative materials. When reactions occur, treatments range from antihistamines for mild symptoms to corticosteroids or epinephrine for more severe responses. Industry and healthcare settings also pursue methods to reduce latex protein content in products or switch to synthetic alternatives to minimize exposure.
