Lateriittikiviä

Lateriittikiviä refers to rocks formed from laterite, a soil and rock type rich in iron and aluminum, formed in hot, wet tropical regions. This type of rock is a result of intense weathering of parent rocks under specific climatic conditions. The process involves the leaching of soluble minerals, leaving behind less soluble elements like iron and aluminum oxides. These oxides give laterite and lateritic rocks their characteristic reddish-brown color.

Lateriittikiviä can vary in texture and composition depending on the original rock and the duration and intensity of weathering. It can range from soft, clay-like material to hard, rock-like formations. In some cases, laterite can harden into a durable rock due to the cementation of its components by iron and aluminum compounds. This hardened form is often used as a building material.

The formation of laterite and consequently lateriittikiviä requires prolonged exposure to high temperatures and heavy rainfall. These conditions are prevalent in tropical and subtropical zones. The weathering process can lead to significant concentrations of valuable minerals, such as bauxite, which is the primary ore of aluminum, making lateritic deposits economically important in many regions.
