Latencysensitiven is a term used to describe systems or applications in which end-to-end delay has a decisive impact on performance or user experience. In German-language usage, it refers to designs and technologies that must meet strict latency constraints, often expressed as deadlines or maximum round-trip times.

Typical domains for latency-sensitive systems include real-time communication such as VoIP and video conferencing, interactive online gaming, teleoperation and robotics, industrial automation and control, autonomous vehicles, and financial trading where even small delays can affect outcomes. The specific latency requirements vary by application, ranging from a few milliseconds in high-frequency trading to tens or hundreds of milliseconds in some human-centric services.

To meet latency requirements, engineers employ strategies that reduce path length and processing delays, such as edge computing, local caching, and content delivery networks. Quality of Service (QoS) and traffic shaping prioritize latency-sensitive traffic. Network design choices matter, including deterministic or time-sensitive networking approaches (for example, IEEE standards related to TSN) and ongoing efforts in deterministic networking within IETF. Low-latency transport protocols (often UDP-based or optimized for quick handshakes) and congestion control tuned for minimal delays are also common. In some cases, a trade-off between latency and reliability is accepted to achieve timely delivery.

Measurement and evaluation focus on end-to-end latency, jitter, packet loss, and deadline miss ratio, often under realistic or worst-case conditions. Latency sensitivity influences infrastructure planning, protocol selection, and application design, and remains an active area of standards development and research.
