Lastuas

Lastuas is a fictional archipelago and sovereign state in the southern seas. It consists of eleven volcanic islands and several islets, with a total land area of about 3,400 square kilometers. The capital, Nera, lies on the largest island and serves as the political and cultural center.

The name Lastuas comes from the local language, with dialectal spelling variations. The official language is Lastuan, a language isolate with regional dialects; English is used in government and education for international relations.

The islands lie in a tropical maritime climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. Coral reefs fringe the coasts, and several active volcanoes shape the landscape. Protected areas cover about 12 percent of land and sea.

History: Archaeological finds indicate settlement beginning around 1000 CE by seaborne communities. European traders reached the islands in the 17th century, followed by colonial administration. Lastuas gained independence in the mid-20th century and established a parliamentary republic in 1963.

The President is the largely ceremonial head of state, while the Prime Minister leads the cabinet and legislature. The unicameral House of Representatives has 40 seats, elected every four years in proportional elections. The system emphasizes environmental stewardship and local autonomy.

The economy relies on sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, and ecotourism. Tourism focuses on marine parks, hiking, and cultural festivals. Renewable energy projects, including wind and small-scale geothermal, support rural communities.

The population is around 170,000. The majority are Lastuan people, with coastal and immigrant communities. Cultural life centers on music, crafts, and festivals celebrating the sea and harvests.

Notable sites include Lastuan National Park and Bright Reef, a UNESCO tentative site. Ongoing conservation programs seek to protect reef systems and migratory bird routes.
