Larvens

Larvens is not a standard term in English biology and may be encountered as an improper plural of larva or as a plural form in non-English languages. The conventional English plural is larvae. A larva is the juvenile form of many animals that undergo metamorphosis, and in many species the larva looks very different from the adult.

Life cycle and metamorphosis are central to understanding larvae. In a typical plan, an animal begins life as an egg that hatches into a larva, which then grows and eventually becomes an adult. Some groups undergo complete metamorphosis, with life stages arranged as egg, larva, pupa, and adult (for example, butterflies, moths, beetles, and flies). Others experience incomplete metamorphosis, where the immature form is a nymph that resembles the adult but is often smaller and wingless. Not all animals have a larval stage; for instance, many vertebrates bypass a distinct larval form.

Common larval forms are diverse. Insects have caterpillars, maggots, and grubs; amphibians have tadpoles; fish produce various larval forms known as larvae; crustaceans exhibit larvae such as nauplius and Zoea. Larvae often occupy different habitats than adults, frequently specializing in feeding, growth, or dispersal in aquatic environments, making metamorphosis a strategy to reduce competition between life stages.
