LanthanIII

LanthanIII is a hypothetical chemical species representing the lanthanum atom in a +3 oxidation state. Lanthanum, a soft, silvery-white metal, is the first element in the lanthanide series. In compounds, lanthanum almost exclusively exhibits a +3 oxidation state, making LanthanIII a common and stable form. This arises from its electron configuration, where it readily loses its two 5d valence electrons and one 4f electron to achieve a stable, filled electron shell.

Lanthanum(III) ions, La³⁺, are found in a wide array of inorganic compounds. Notable examples include lanthanum(III) oxide (La₂O₃), lanthanum(III) carbonate (La₂(CO₃)₃), and various lanthanum(III) halides and sulfates. These compounds find applications in diverse fields. For instance, lanthanum(III) oxide is used in optical lenses, high-refractive-index glasses, and as a catalyst. Lanthanum compounds are also employed in phosphors for lighting and displays, as catalysts in petroleum cracking, and in water treatment. The chemical properties of LanthanIII are characterized by its large ionic radius and its tendency to form ionic bonds. Due to its stable +3 oxidation state, LanthanIII is generally resistant to redox reactions under typical conditions.
