Lampholders

A lampholder, also known as a lamp socket or bulb holder, is a fixture that provides an electrical connection to a light bulb and allows it to be mounted in a lighting fixture. It is a crucial component in most lighting systems, ensuring that power can be supplied to the bulb safely and securely. Lampholders come in various types, designed to accommodate different bulb bases and voltage/wattage requirements.

The most common type of lampholder uses a screw-in base, often referred to as an Edison screw. These are characterized by their threaded metal shell that screws into a corresponding threaded socket within the lampholder. Sizes vary, with the most prevalent in household applications being E26 (North America) and E27 (Europe and many other regions). Bayonet mount lampholders, with two pins that twist and lock into slots, are also common, particularly in older fixtures or specific applications like automotive lighting.

Other types include pin-base lampholders for halogen and compact fluorescent bulbs (like GU10 or G9), and specialized connectors for LED modules. The material of the lampholder is typically a heat-resistant insulating material such as ceramic or plastic, with metal contacts to conduct electricity. Safety is paramount, and lampholders are designed to prevent accidental contact with live electrical parts. They are an essential interface between the electrical supply and the light source itself, facilitating the illumination of spaces.
