Lammitysjäähdytys

Lammitysjäähdytys, also known as thermal energy storage or phase change material (PCM) cooling, is a technology that utilizes phase change materials to store and release thermal energy, effectively providing cooling. These materials undergo a physical transformation, typically melting or solidifying, at a specific temperature. During the melting process, they absorb a significant amount of heat from the surroundings with minimal temperature increase. Conversely, when they solidify, they release this stored heat.

The primary application of lammitysjäähdytys is in building climate control. During periods of low energy demand or when renewable energy sources like solar power are abundant, the phase change material can be cooled and solidified, effectively storing "cold" for later use. When cooling is needed, such as during peak hours or hot afternoons, the PCM melts, absorbing heat from the building's interior and thus reducing the need for conventional, energy-intensive cooling systems. This can lead to significant energy savings and a reduction in electricity costs.

Several types of phase change materials are used, including organic compounds like paraffins and inorganic salts. The choice of material depends on the desired operating temperature for the cooling application.
