Lamellierte

Lamellierte is the German adjective derived from lamellieren, meaning to form or relate to lamellae, which are thin plate-like layers. The term describes objects or structures that consist of or display lamellae, often arranged in a regular, layered pattern. The root lamella comes from Latin lamella, meaning a small plate.

In biology and anatomy, lamellae are common structural features. For example, gill lamellae in many fish increase surface area for gas exchange, and plant chloroplasts contain thylakoid membranes organized into lamellae that connect to grana. In fungi, mushrooms with gills are described as lamellate because the gill structures resemble flat plates under the cap. The term is also used more broadly for tissues or organs that show thin, plate-like layers.

In materials science and engineering, lamination refers to stacking thin sheets or films to create a composite or laminate. A component described as lamelliert typically consists of multiple layers of materials bound together to improve properties such as strength, stiffness, or durability. Examples include laminated wood products like plywood, laminated glass, and various metal or polymer laminates, as well as layered metal structures known as laminated steels.

In geology and sedimentology, lamination refers to fine, parallel layering within rocks or sediments, formed by seasonal deposition or changes in sediment supply. While not every laminated structure is described with the adjective lamelliert, the concept of lamellae is central to many natural and engineered layered systems.
