Lajikäsitteellä

Lajikäsitteellä is a Finnish phrase that literally translates to “with regard to the species concept” or “concerning the species concept.” It is commonly used in biological taxonomy, conservation science, and environmental law to specify that a statement, regulation, or analysis is based on a particular definition or interpretation of what constitutes a species (laji). In many contexts the phrase clarifies that the categorization of organisms under study follows a standardized taxonomic framework rather than a subjective or informal grouping.

In taxonomy, species concepts can vary—biological, morphological, phylogenetic, ecological, among others—each offering a distinct set of criteria for delimiting species boundaries. When a researcher or legislator uses the term lajikäsitteellä, they are indicating that decisions or conclusions rely on one of these accepted species concepts.
