Laitteistökytkimet, or hardware switches, are essential components in computer networking. They connect multiple devices within a local area network (LAN) and forward data packets between them. Unlike older hubs, which broadcast data to all connected devices, switches are more intelligent. They learn the MAC addresses of connected devices and create direct connections, sending data only to the intended recipient. This significantly improves network efficiency and reduces collisions.

Switches come in various forms, from unmanaged desktop switches for small home or office networks to complex managed switches used in enterprise environments. Managed switches offer advanced features such as VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks) for segmenting networks, Quality of Service (QoS) for prioritizing traffic, and port mirroring for network monitoring. They also allow for remote configuration and management.

The primary function of a hardware switch is to facilitate communication. When a device sends data, the switch examines the destination MAC address in the data packet. It then consults its internal MAC address table to determine which port the destination device is connected to and forwards the packet accordingly. If the destination MAC address is unknown, the switch will temporarily broadcast the packet to all ports, except the one it came from, to discover the correct path.
