Lainakohtaiset

Lainakohtaiset are a type of railway siding in Finland used primarily in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The term is Finnish and translates to "loan point", which refers to the practice of creating a temporary railway siding for specific cargo handling needs.

Initially, lainakohtaiset were used by private companies to transport raw materials and goods from coastal towns to inland areas. The rail infrastructure served as a means to transfer goods to larger ships for export or further inland transportation by wagon. Owing to the unique geography of Finland, which is dominated by forests and lakes, many lies were established near ports to facilitate the export of timber and natural resources to Europe.

Historically, lainakohtaiset were often punctuated by entrepôts and depots, where cargo would be transferred between wagons and ships. This led to the concentration of commercial and industrial activities near the ports. Two-story warehouses and industrial facilities began to appear in these areas, taking advantage of access to the waterborne cargo. Spatial planning based on eastern and western expanses in transportation began due to the practice of utilizing inland waterfront regions while preserving navigable distances between ports and supplies.

Thanks to increased transportation interconnectivity in the 20th century, the significance of lainakohtaiset decreased, and many abandoned or repurposed them as entertainment or sporting facilities. Presently, those regions retain the legacy of their heyday in Finnish economic development and represent important artifacts combining regional industrial and commercial history.
