Laikymu

Laikymu is a term found in Lithuanian grammar. It is the instrumental singular form of the noun laikymas, which denotes the act of holding, keeping, or maintaining. The base laikymas originates from the verb laikyti, meaning “to hold” or “to keep.”

Etymology and form. The word laikymu derives from the stem laikym- plus the standard instrumental singular ending -u. In Lithuanian, instrumental forms are used to express the means or instrument by which an action is performed, as well as other relations that can be described with the instrumental case. Laikymu is therefore a grammatical form rather than a separate lexical entry with its own meaning.

Grammatical usage. As an instrumental singular form, laikymu appears in phrases where the means or method of an action is indicated. It is part of inflected forms that modify the noun laikymas to fit syntactic function within a sentence. Because it is a case form, laikymu does not function as an independent word with a stand-alone definition.
