Ladungsträgern is a German term that translates to "charge carriers" in English. It refers to the fundamental particles within a material that are responsible for the conduction of electric current. These particles possess an electric charge, allowing them to move under the influence of an electric field and thus facilitate the flow of electricity.

In metals, the primary charge carriers are electrons, specifically the free or conduction electrons that are loosely bound to the atoms in the metallic lattice. These electrons are highly mobile and can move freely throughout the material. In semiconductors, charge carriers can be either electrons or "holes." Holes are not actual particles but represent the absence of an electron in a covalent bond.
