Laatuattribuutit, known in English as quality attributes, are non-functional characteristics of a system that describe how well the system performs a particular function or how well it meets certain requirements. They are crucial for understanding and evaluating the overall quality and usability of a software system. Unlike functional requirements, which specify what a system does, quality attributes describe how the system does it.

Common quality attributes include performance, which refers to the responsiveness of the system under various loads; security, concerning the protection of data and resources from unauthorized access; usability, measuring how easy the system is to learn and use; reliability, indicating the probability of failure-free operation; and maintainability, describing how easy it is to modify and update the system. Other important attributes can include scalability, portability, and testability.

Defining and measuring quality attributes is essential during the system design and development phases. They guide architectural decisions and provide a basis for testing and evaluation. Neglecting quality attributes can lead to systems that are difficult to use, insecure, slow, or expensive to maintain, even if they technically fulfill their functional requirements. Stakeholders often have varying priorities for different quality attributes, necessitating careful consideration and trade-offs during the development process.
