Laatikkot

Laatikkot is a term used in Finnish design discourse to describe a family of modular, interlocking storage containers. The name combines laatikko, Finnish for “box,” with the suffix -t to indicate a group or series. The concept emphasizes reuse, adaptable configuration, and straightforward assembly without tools.

Laatikkot units are hollow, box-like modules that can be stacked, linked, and rotated to form shelves, chests, or transport crates. Standard features include uniform edge profiles, corner interlocks, and optional locking mechanisms. Common materials include plywood, recycled plastic, and light metals; sizes typically range from small (about 20–30 cm per side) to large (up to 60 cm per side). Some variants include drawers, lids, or modular dividers. The system supports both vertical stacking and horizontal nesting, enabling flexible layouts for storage or display.

Use and distribution: Laatikkot is discussed in contemporary design literature as a low-cost, modular solution for household organization, educational settings, and light logistics. The approach favors longevity, repairability, and reconfiguration over single-use packaging.
