LVIS

LVIS (Laser Alternating Visibility system) is a scanning laser rangefinder technology used in applications such as surveying, geomatics and robotics. Developed by Blue Marble Geographics, a geospatial software company based in the United States, LVIS uses a rotating mirror and laser reflector system to conduct precise measurements of the environment.

LVIS operates via laser pulses transmitted into the environment, which are then reflected back to the sensor where the distance is calculated based on the time of flight of the pulse. Measurements are taken as fast as 1,000 times per second, resulting in dense, high-resolution point clouds that can be used to model highly detailed representations of the environment.

Key applications for LVIS include surveying and mapping, ground transportation, utility asset management, and robotics. LVIS can be mounted on ground vehicles, aircraft, or boats, and is particularly useful for areas inaccessible or hazardous for traditional surveying equipment.

LVIS systems have been used in various projects worldwide, such as land surveying, airport mapping and environmental monitoring. System performance varies depending on environmental conditions, with performance slightly reduced in variable, i.e., windy conditions.

LVIS is a tool for a georeferenced 3D image of a scene without leaving the ground vehicle, it allows quick and easy surveying and data collection on the ground. This feature makes it useful for routine acquisition of future ground survey plans or work outsourcing.
