These systems are crucial safety procedures implemented in workplaces to prevent accidental startup of machinery and equipment during maintenance, servicing, or repair operations. The primary goal of LOTO is to protect workers from hazardous energy sources, such as electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal, or gravitational energy.

A typical LOTO procedure involves several steps. First, affected employees must be notified of the impending LOTO. Then, the equipment must be shut down in a safe manner. Following shutdown, all energy sources must be isolated and rendered inoperable. This isolation is usually achieved through the application of locks and tags. Locks are physically attached to energy isolating devices, preventing their operation, while tags provide important information about the lock, such as the name of the person who applied it and the reason for the lockout.

Before beginning any work, employees must verify that the equipment is de-energized. Once the maintenance or servicing is complete, a thorough inspection of the work area is performed, and all tools and equipment are removed. Finally, before restoring energy, affected employees are notified, and the locks and tags are removed by the authorized person who applied them.
