LHR

LHR, or London Heathrow Airport, is a major international airport located in the London Borough of Hillingdon, about 14 miles west of central London. It is the United Kingdom's busiest airport by passenger traffic and serves as a principal hub for British Airways. The airport is owned and operated by Heathrow Airport Holdings (formerly BAA).

The airport currently operates four passenger terminals—2, 3, 4, and 5—with Terminal 1 having been decommissioned. It has two parallel runways, 09L/27R and 09R/27L, used for a wide range of domestic and international services.

Opened as a Royal Air Force aerodrome during the 1940s, civil aviation began soon after, and the airport grew in the postwar era to become one of the world's leading international gateways. It is a major hub for long-haul and transatlantic routes, largely served by British Airways and its partners, and hosts numerous international carriers.

Transport connections: Heathrow is linked to central London by rail and rail-air services, including the Heathrow Express to Paddington, and the London Underground's Piccadilly line. Road access is provided by the M4 motorway and the M25 orbital road, with extensive bus and coach networks serving the airport.

Future plans: Over the years, expansion plans have included the construction of a third runway to increase capacity, subject to planning and environmental considerations. The airport continues to implement modernization and sustainability programs.
