An LED dimmer device is an electronic component or a complete unit designed to control the brightness of LED (light-emitting diode) lighting. Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs, LEDs do not dim linearly with simple voltage reduction. LED dimmers employ various methods to achieve dimming, the most common being Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and, less frequently, constant current reduction (CCR).

PWM dimmers rapidly switch the LED on and off at varying duty cycles. The longer the "on" period relative to the "off" period, the brighter the LED appears. This rapid switching is imperceptible to the human eye, creating the illusion of continuous dimming. CCR dimmers, on the other hand, adjust the current flowing through the LED to control its brightness. This method is often used in higher-power LED applications.

LED dimmer devices can be integrated into luminaires, exist as standalone units like wall-mounted dimmers, or be controlled remotely via wireless protocols such as DALI, Zigbee, or Bluetooth. Compatibility is crucial; an LED dimmer must be specifically designed for LED loads, as attempting to dim LEDs with a dimmer intended for incandescent or halogen bulbs can result in flickering, buzzing, or damage to the LED driver or the dimmer itself. Choosing the correct dimmer ensures smooth, flicker-free dimming performance and extends the lifespan of LED lighting systems.
