LDLreceptori refers to a class of receptors found in various cell types, including liver cells and cells within arterial walls. They are involved in the regulation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), a type of cholesterol-carrying lipoprotein in the blood.

LDLreceptori recognizes and binds to LDL, which triggers a series of cellular responses to regulate cholesterol levels in the bloodstream. When LDL binds to its receptor, it is internalized by the cell, where it is broken down, and its components are metabolized. This process helps to remove excess cholesterol from the blood.

There are several subtypes of LDLreceptori, each with a distinct tissue expression pattern and function. The most commonly studied type is LDL receptor (LDLR), which is expressed in liver cells, arterial cells, and macrophages. Mutations in the LDLR gene have been associated with hypercholesterolemia, a condition characterized by exceptionally high levels of LDL cholesterol in the blood. This condition can lead to the development of atherosclerosis, a condition in which arterial walls become thickened and hardened due to cholesterol buildup.
