LATCH is a standardized system for securing child car seats in vehicles. The acronym LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren. This system provides an alternative to using the vehicle's seat belts to attach a child safety seat. The primary components of the LATCH system are lower anchor bars, typically found in the seat bight of the vehicle's rear seats, and a top tether anchor, usually located on the rear of the seat, the ceiling, or the cargo area floor.

Child car seats designed for LATCH use are equipped with connectors that attach to these anchor points. The lower anchors are designed to secure the seat from below, while the top tether provides an additional point of restraint at the top of the seat, reducing forward head movement in a crash. Each vehicle and car seat has weight limits for using the LATCH system, which should be adhered to for safety.
