L3välimuisti, often referred to as L3 cache, is a level of cache memory in a computer's central processing unit (CPU). Cache memory is a smaller, faster memory that stores frequently accessed data and instructions from the main RAM, allowing the CPU to retrieve them much quicker than accessing RAM directly. CPUs typically have multiple levels of cache, designated as L1, L2, and L3, with L1 being the smallest and fastest, and L3 being the largest and slowest among the on-chip caches.

The L3 cache is a shared resource that can be accessed by all the cores within a CPU. This shared nature is a key characteristic, enabling cores to communicate and share data more efficiently without needing to go to the slower main memory. When a core needs data, it first checks its L1 and L2 caches. If the data is not found, it then checks the L3 cache. If the data is present in the L3 cache, it is retrieved and potentially copied into the core's L1 and L2 caches for faster access in the future. If the data is not found in any of the cache levels, the CPU must fetch it from the main RAM.

The size of the L3 cache can vary significantly between different CPU models and manufacturers. Larger L3 caches generally lead to better performance, especially in multi-core applications and demanding workloads like gaming and video editing, as they can hold more data, reducing the need to access the slower main memory. The effective implementation and management of the L3 cache are crucial for overall system responsiveness and performance.
