L3välimuisti, often referred to as L3 cache or last-level cache (LLC), is a type of cache memory used in computer processors. It serves as a larger, slower, and more inclusive pool of memory that all cores of a CPU can access. Unlike L1 and L2 caches, which are typically private to each individual processor core, the L3 cache is shared across the entire processor die.

The primary purpose of L3 cache is to reduce the average time it takes for the CPU to access data from main memory (RAM). When a core needs data, it first checks its L1 cache, then its L2 cache. If the data is not found in either, it then checks the L3 cache. If the data is present in the L3 cache, it is retrieved much faster than if it had to be fetched from RAM. If it's not in the L3 cache, it must be fetched from RAM, and a copy of that data is usually placed into the L3 cache for potential future use by any core.

The size of L3 cache varies significantly depending on the processor model and its intended application. Higher-end processors, particularly those designed for servers or high-performance computing, tend to have larger L3 caches to accommodate more data and improve overall performance. The increased capacity of L3 cache can significantly benefit applications that handle large datasets or require frequent access to frequently used data. This shared nature helps to improve communication and data sharing between cores, reducing latency when one core needs data that another core has recently accessed.
