Lífsviður

Lífsviður is a concept found in Norse mythology, often translated as the "World Tree" or "Tree of Life." It is depicted as a colossal ash tree that stands at the center of the cosmos, connecting the nine worlds. These worlds are understood to be situated at different levels of the tree, from the roots to the highest branches.

The tree is supported by three massive roots, each reaching into a different realm. One root extends to the well of Urd, where the Norns, the goddesses of fate, reside and weave the destinies of all beings. Another root reaches towards Jotunheim, the land of the giants, and the third goes to Niflheim, the realm of ice and mist.

At the base of Lífsviður, there is a constant struggle. A dragon named Níðhöggr gnaws at its roots, while a stag, Eikþyrnir, feeds on its leaves. Squirrels, led by Ratatoskr, scamper up and down the trunk, carrying messages and often inciting conflict between the dragon and an eagle that perches in the highest branches.

Despite these challenges, Lífsviður is a symbol of life, interconnectedness, and the cyclical nature of existence. It represents the cosmic order and the foundation upon which all reality is built. Its health and stability are crucial for the well-being of the entire universe in Norse cosmology.
