This printing method involves heating a specific area of a ribbon that is coated with a solid ink or dye. When heated by the print head, the ink melts and is transferred to the substrate, typically paper or plastic film. The resulting image or text is durable and resistant to smudging and fading.

There are several types of lämpötulostusväri, each suited for different applications and materials. Wax ribbons are the most common and cost-effective, suitable for general-purpose labeling on paper. Wax-resin ribbons offer improved durability and scratch resistance, making them ideal for labels exposed to moderate wear and tear. Resin ribbons provide the highest level of durability, resistant to chemicals, abrasion, and extreme temperatures, and are used for demanding applications such as product identification, outdoor labeling, and industrial marking.

The color of lämpötulostusväri is determined by the dye or pigment used in its formulation. While black is the most prevalent color for its contrast and legibility, other colors are available for specific coding or aesthetic purposes.
