Lämpöpumppuissa is a Finnish term referring to heat pumps. A heat pump is a device that transfers thermal energy from a source of heat to a destination called a "heat sink." Heat pumps move thermal energy in the opposite direction of spontaneous heat transfer, by absorbing heat from a colder location and releasing it into a warmer one. This process requires work.

Heat pumps are commonly used for heating and cooling buildings. They are considered an energy-efficient way to provide climate control as they can move more heat than the energy they consume. The primary components of a heat pump system include a compressor, a condenser, an expansion valve, and an evaporator. These components work together in a refrigeration cycle to achieve the desired temperature transfer.

There are several types of heat pumps, categorized by the source from which they extract heat and the sink to which they deliver it. Common types include air-source heat pumps, which extract heat from the outside air, and ground-source (geothermal) heat pumps, which utilize the stable temperature of the earth. Water-source heat pumps are also used, drawing heat from bodies of water.

In the context of energy consumption, heat pumps can significantly reduce the reliance on traditional heating methods like direct electric heating or fossil fuels. Their efficiency is often measured by the Coefficient of Performance (COP) for heating and the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) for cooling. A higher COP indicates greater efficiency, meaning more heat is delivered for each unit of electricity consumed. The operation of a heat pump can be reversed to provide cooling during warmer months, making them a versatile climate control solution.
