Lämpömittarityypin, often translated as thermometer type, refers to the classification of thermometers based on their working principle and the physical property they utilize to measure temperature. Different types of thermometers are suited for various applications, temperature ranges, and accuracy requirements.

One common type is the liquid-in-glass thermometer, which uses the thermal expansion of a liquid, such as mercury or alcohol, contained within a sealed glass tube with a calibrated scale. As temperature increases, the liquid expands and rises in the tube, indicating the temperature. Another prevalent type is the bimetallic strip thermometer. This device relies on the differential thermal expansion of two dissimilar metals bonded together. When heated, the metals expand at different rates, causing the strip to bend. This bending is then translated into a temperature reading, often displayed on a dial.

Digital thermometers, a more modern innovation, typically employ electronic sensors. Resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) and thermocouples are common examples. RTDs change their electrical resistance with temperature, while thermocouples generate a voltage that is proportional to the temperature difference between two junctions. These electronic signals are then processed by circuitry to display a digital temperature reading. Infrared thermometers, also known as non-contact thermometers, measure the thermal radiation emitted by an object. They are useful for measuring the temperature of objects that are difficult to reach or are at very high temperatures.
