Lämmönjohtavuus refers to a material's ability to conduct heat. It is a fundamental property in thermodynamics and material science, describing how efficiently thermal energy is transferred through a substance. Materials with high lämmönjohtavuus, such as metals, readily allow heat to pass through them. Conversely, materials with low lämmönjohtavuus, known as thermal insulators, resist the flow of heat.

The lämmönjohtavuus of a material is typically quantified by a thermal conductivity coefficient, denoted by the symbol 'k'. This coefficient is measured in watts per meter-kelvin (W/m·K). A higher value of 'k' indicates better heat conduction. Factors influencing lämmönjohtavuus include the material's composition, its atomic structure, temperature, and phase (solid, liquid, or gas). For instance, metals generally have high lämmönjohtavuus due to the presence of free electrons that can easily transfer kinetic energy. Gases, on the other hand, have very low lämmönjohtavuus because their molecules are far apart and collisions are less frequent.

Understanding lämmönjohtavuus is crucial in numerous applications, from designing efficient heating and cooling systems to developing thermal insulation for buildings and electronic devices. For example, in cooking pots, high lämmönjohtavuus materials like copper or aluminum are used for the base to ensure even heat distribution. In contrast, the handles are often made of low lämmönjohtavuus materials like plastic or wood to prevent burns.
