Läänityksiä

Läänityksiä refers to the historical system of feudal grants, primarily known in Finland and Sweden. This system involved the crown granting land, often large estates, to individuals, usually nobles, in exchange for military service, administrative duties, or other forms of loyalty. These granted lands were known as läänityksiä, and the recipients were called lääninherra or lensherre.

The läänitys system was a fundamental part of medieval and early modern governance in these regions. Lords who received läänityksiä had significant power over the land and its inhabitants. They were responsible for collecting taxes, administering justice, and raising troops for the crown. This created a decentralized form of governance where local lords held considerable authority.
