Küstenland, German for “coastal land,” was a crown land of the Cisleithanian (Austro-Hungarian) half of the empire from 1849 to 1918. It covered the coastal regions along the northern Adriatic Sea, comprising the Austrian Littoral with Istria and the important port city of Trieste, along with the adjacent coastal districts. The crown land functioned as a maritime and administrative region within the empire and was centered on the port and commercial hub in Trieste.
