Külmtöötlemisterasid are a category of tool steels that are specifically designed to be worked at room temperature or slightly elevated temperatures. This distinguishes them from hot-worked tool steels, which are intended for use at high temperatures. The primary advantage of cold-worked tool steels lies in their ability to achieve high hardness and toughness after heat treatment, while maintaining excellent dimensional stability during the manufacturing process.

These steels typically possess high carbon content, contributing to significant hardening through the formation of carbides. They also contain alloying elements such as chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, and vanadium, which enhance wear resistance, toughness, and hardenability. Common types of cold-worked tool steels include high-carbon, high-chromium steels (like D2 and D3), oil-hardening steels (like O1), and shock-resisting steels (like S1 and S7).

The applications for cold-worked tool steels are numerous and varied, often found in tooling for stamping, blanking, coining, drawing, and extruding metal. They are also used for cutting tools operating at lower speeds and temperatures, such as knives, shear blades, and thread rolling dies.
