Külmatunnet, often translated as "feeling cold," is a subjective sensory experience indicating that the body's temperature is lower than the perceived comfortable or neutral level. This sensation is a fundamental physiological response, acting as a crucial signal to protect the body from potentially harmful low temperatures.

The perception of cold is mediated by specialized sensory receptors in the skin called thermoreceptors. These receptors are sensitive to changes in temperature and send signals to the brain, specifically the hypothalamus, which regulates body temperature. When these thermoreceptors detect a drop in temperature, they trigger a cascade of physiological and behavioral responses aimed at conserving heat and generating more.

Physiological responses include vasoconstriction, where blood vessels near the skin surface narrow to reduce heat loss, and shivering, an involuntary muscle activity that generates heat. Behavioral responses can include seeking warmer environments, putting on more clothing, or increasing physical activity.

The intensity of the feeling of cold can vary greatly depending on factors such as ambient temperature, humidity, wind speed (wind chill), individual metabolic rate, body fat percentage, and clothing insulation. What one person perceives as uncomfortably cold, another might find tolerable. Psychological factors also play a role, with anticipation or anxiety about the cold potentially amplifying the sensation. Prolonged exposure to extreme cold can lead to hypothermia, a dangerous condition where the body loses heat faster than it can produce it.
