Külalismolekuleid are molecules that bind to a host molecule in a host-guest complex. This binding is typically non-covalent, meaning that the forces holding the guest to the host are relatively weak, such as van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonds, or ionic interactions. The size and shape of the guest molecule are often complementary to a specific cavity or binding site within the host molecule, enabling selective recognition and binding.

The concept of host-guest chemistry, which studies these interactions, was pioneered by Nobel laureate Charles J. Pedersen. Host molecules are often macrocyclic compounds, such as crown ethers or cyclodextrins, which possess a cavity capable of encapsulating guest molecules. However, host molecules can also be simpler structures or even supramolecular assemblies.
