Kühlschmierstoffe, often abbreviated as KSS, are essential fluids used in machining operations. Their primary functions are to cool the cutting zone and to lubricate the interface between the tool and the workpiece. This dual role significantly impacts the efficiency, precision, and longevity of the machining process. Cooling prevents overheating of the tool and workpiece, which can lead to tool wear, material deformation, and inaccurate dimensions. Lubrication reduces friction, allowing for smoother cutting, improved surface finish, and lower energy consumption.

Kühlschmierstoffe can be broadly categorized into several types. Emulsions, also known as soluble oils, are mixtures of oil and water stabilized by emulsifiers. They offer good cooling and moderate lubrication. Neat oils, which are mineral or synthetic oils without water, provide excellent lubrication but poorer cooling. Synthetic fluids are water-based solutions containing chemical additives for cooling and lubrication, offering high cooling performance. Semi-synthetic fluids combine characteristics of both emulsions and synthetics.

The selection of a specific Kühlschmierstoff depends on various factors, including the type of machining process (turning, milling, grinding), the materials being worked, the desired surface finish, and environmental and health considerations. Proper handling, maintenance, and disposal of KSS are crucial to ensure worker safety, environmental protection, and the optimal performance of machining equipment.
