Költségobjektum is a Hungarian term that translates to "cost object" in English. It represents any activity or segment within a business for which costs are accumulated and assigned. Understanding and tracking cost objects is fundamental to cost accounting and management accounting practices.

In essence, a cost object is an item or entity to which costs can be directly or indirectly traced. This can include a wide range of items such as a specific product, a service, a project, a department, a customer, a geographical region, or even a marketing campaign. The primary purpose of identifying cost objects is to determine the cost of producing a good, delivering a service, or undertaking a particular activity.

By assigning costs to specific objects, businesses gain valuable insights into their profitability and operational efficiency. This information is crucial for decision-making, including pricing strategies, product development, resource allocation, and performance evaluation. For instance, knowing the cost of a particular product helps management decide whether to continue its production, modify it, or discontinue it.
