Költségfüggvények are mathematical functions used to represent the cost of producing a certain quantity of goods or services. In economics and business, they are fundamental tools for analyzing and optimizing production decisions. A cost function typically relates the total cost incurred by a firm to the level of output it produces. It's usually expressed as C(q), where C represents the total cost and q represents the quantity of output.

These functions can take various forms, often reflecting different cost structures. Fixed costs, which do not change with the level of output (e.g., rent), and variable costs, which do change with output (e.g., raw materials), are key components. Average cost, which is the total cost divided by the quantity produced, and marginal cost, which is the additional cost of producing one more unit, are also derived from the cost function and are crucial for decision-making.

Understanding the shape and behavior of cost functions allows businesses to determine optimal production levels, predict cost changes, and make informed pricing strategies. For instance, a firm might use its cost function to find the output level that minimizes average cost, thereby maximizing efficiency.
