Kõrgushaigust

Kõrgushaigust, also known as altitude sickness, is a term used to describe the negative physiological effects that can occur when a person ascends to a higher altitude too quickly. It is primarily caused by lower atmospheric pressure and reduced oxygen availability at higher elevations. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and typically manifest within 12 to 72 hours of reaching a new altitude.

Common symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath. In more severe cases, kõrgushaigus can lead to pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs) or cerebral edema (swelling of the brain), which are life-threatening conditions. Risk factors for developing altitude sickness include a rapid ascent, strenuous physical activity at altitude, dehydration, and a history of previous altitude sickness.

Prevention is key and involves ascending gradually, allowing the body time to acclimatize. Staying well-hydrated and avoiding alcohol and strenuous exercise during the initial ascent can also help. If symptoms develop, descending to a lower altitude is the most effective treatment. Medications like acetazolamide can be prescribed to help prevent or treat altitude sickness. Understanding the risks and taking appropriate precautions can significantly reduce the likelihood of experiencing kõrgushaigus.
