Képtár

Képtár is a Hungarian term meaning a gallery or collection of pictures. It designates either a space in which visual artworks are shown or a collection of such works stored or studied by an institution or private owner. In museums and other institutions, a képtár is typically a designated room or wing that houses holdings such as paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and other graphic media. The word can also refer to the department within a museum responsible for a picture collection, or to a private collection assembled for display.

The term derives from képi, meaning image or picture, and tár, meaning storehouse or repository, reflecting its function as a repository of images. In contemporary usage, képtár is often used interchangeably with galéria, though galéria more commonly emphasizes public exhibition spaces, while képtár emphasizes the collection and its preservation. In everyday Hungarian, the concept also extends to digital contexts, with e.g., a company or institution maintaining an online képtár or image archive.
